Summertime Evolution of Net Community Production and CO2Flux in the Western Arctic Ocean

چکیده

To examine seasonal and regional variabilities in metabolic status the coupling of net community production (NCP) air-sea CO2 fluxes western Arctic Ocean, we collected underway measurements surface O2/Ar partial pressure (pCO2) summers 2016 2018. With a box-model, demonstrate that accounting for local sea ice history (in addition to wind history) is important estimating NCP from biological oxygen saturation (?(O2/Ar)) polar regions. Incorporating this correction, found most exhibited positive ?(O2/Ar) negative pCO2 saturation, ?(pCO2), indicative autotrophy but with relationship between two parameters varying regionally. In heavy ice-covered areas, where gas exchange was suppressed, even minor resulted relatively high low water due limited exchange. Within marginal zone, flux magnitudes were strongly inversely correlated, suggesting an air induced primarily by removal waters. ice-free waters, varied according nutrient supply. oligotrophic Canada Basin, both small, controlled mainly On nutrient-rich Chukchi Shelf, strong, resulting great O2 release uptake. This overview its various stages ice-melt status, provides useful insight into possible biogeochemical evolution rapidly changing oceans.

Determining net dissolved organic carbon production in the hydrographically complex western Arctic Ocean

Each spring and summer, the Chukchi Sea in the western Arctic Ocean experiences a short but intense phytoplankton bloom that is controlled by sea ice cover, nutrient availability, and river runoff. During the bloom, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations are drawn down in the mixed layer (shelf, ,D100 mmol kg21; shelf-break, ,D50 mmol kg21; basin, ,D5 mmol kg21) and converted to partic...

Ultraviolet radiation enhances Arctic net plankton community production

In this study we report the response of net community production (NCP) of plankton communities in the Arctic surface waters exposure to natural ultraviolet radiation (UVR) conditions. A possible bias in previous measurements performed using borosilicate glass bottles (opaque to most UVR) can underestimate NCP. Here we show that 77% of the sampled communities suffer, on average, 38.5% of net inc...

Ocean carbon cycling in the Indian Ocean: 2. Estimates of net community production

[1] The spatiotemporal variability of ocean carbon cycling and air-sea CO2 exchange in the Indian Ocean was examined using inorganic carbon data collected as part of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) cruises in 1995. Several carbon mass balance approaches were used to estimate rates of net community production (NCP) in the Indian Ocean. Carbon transports into and out of the Indian O...
